FAKING A LARGE SOURCE OF LIGHT
At times when I don’t have a large modifier available (just a small/medium umbrella), or I want to achieve a different look, I go for the lighting setup used on the following maternity images. Here I placed a strobe on the left of camera, almost parallel to the wall on the right side. I used a medium Photek SoftLighter that has one layer of diffusion. Behind me I placed my second strobe, bare, directed into a V-Flat. This will fake a large source of light and it works as fill light. Again I would expose for fill light first to make sure my scene is well-lit, and only after that I’d add the SoftLighter (or umbrella) to light the model’s face. If I need to fill in the shadows I would either have the setup closer to a white wall on the right side (opposite side of umbrella), or add a second V-Flat.
