One way to make your subject stand out? Make it larger. Have it fill the frame. If you were to stand in line at your favorite coffee shop and order a large cup of coffee and they gave it to you only filled up halfway, how would you feel? Totally gypped right? Fill the frame with your subject. Make it stand out. The crop tool is one of the most underrated tools in Lightroom. It’s not just there to crop off a distracting edge. Use it to fill the frame with the subject. Yes, ideally, at the point of capture you would do this, i.e., use a longer focal length or get closer to the subject. We’re talking editing here though. Once you see the impact of filling the frame using the crop tool, let that inform your decisions in the field to make a better image.
