From Image Capture to Final Delivery | Matt Monath
Sometimes retouchers have to deal with comping in screens for devices, especially if we’re shooting with strobes and the screens aren’t bright enough to be exposed accurately. In these cases, we need to show off the reflective qualities of the screens, but we need to avoid having the imagery on the screens muddled by these reflections. Check out the shot above, featuring the Apple Watch Series 6, Series 3, and SE, shot for Business Insider. After shooting, I edited the screens to be fully black, which you see in the before shot. After comping in the screens, I added vectors of the screen reflections, so the digital watch faces didn’t fade into the reflections. If we’re thinking in terms of layers, the reflections are on top of the screens, despite the screens being comped in. The best way to accomplish this is to draw the screens in using handmade vectors.
