Tips & Tricks to Master Masks In Photoshop | Dave Cross

TIP 4. DISABLE THE MASK

If you want to see the layer without the effect of its mask without deleting the mask, hold down Shift and click on the mask thumbnail. A large red X will appear on the mask thumbnail to remind you that it is disabled, but still available. This operates like a toggle switch, so to enable the mask, Shift-click again on the thumbnail. Temporarily disabling the mask can be helpful in comparing the original with your masked result.

TIP 5. LOWER THE DENSITY

Another option for comparing the original with your masked result is to temporarily lower the density setting for the mask. To do this, with the mask selected go to the Properties panel and use the Density slider to lower the setting. Using this slider is almost like lowering the opacity of the mask to gradually show the original layer. Since this is a non-destructive setting, you can leave the Density slider to complete various operations and then later return the Density slider to 100%.
